A singspiel performed by The Gray Voice Ensemble.

The Weight of Light is a singspiel in both German and English for choir and organ underlaid with field and voice recordings. In a narrative about light, perception and visibility, the sacred and the profane, the piece asks, What do I see?
Darcy and Luke meet for the first time at a primordial infant disco party. This is followed by adolescent depression and epiphany, escape, isolation, breaks and openings. They play to survive, guided by voices to bear witness. They comprehend what they have, only to let go in the swells of ancient romance. It’s only life!
The Gray Voice Ensemble is an interdisciplinary community choir founded in 2013 by composer and artistic director Elisabeth Wood. The creative process takes place in the context of a collective authorship called Albert McCloud. Part of this collective is The Anonymous Writing Group (TAWG), which meets in advance of the choir season to write the texts used. The outgoing form is an abstract singspiel that traces the temporal and spatial layers of the piece’s development.
Previous performance venues have included churches (Taborkirche), theaters (Volksbühne Berlin), art associations (Schinkel Pavillon, Uferstudios, SPOiLER Aktionsraum, Kühlhaus, Tropez im Sommerbad Humboldthain), and museums (Museum Ludwig), as well as sociocultural centers in Berlin (Daytrip, JuKuZ, Blue Tap, Reduta-Berlin Schauspielschule, Alte Feuerwache, District School without Center).
