ARIEL – FEMINISMS IN THE AESTHETICS

  • Location

ARIEL is a platform and interface for the development and dissemination of exhibitions of high artistic quality, centered on new ramifications of feminism in the aesthetic field. Through an innovative facilitation of artistic research, the project seeks to expand and nuance the framework of understanding of the field of feminism and to create a contact area where the topics can be accessed. The initiative is Nordic and internationally oriented with a long-term perspective on branching out into new collaborations, contexts and situations.

ARIEL is initiated by Nina Wöhlk, and co- run and curated with Karen Vestergaard Andersen. We aim to operate sustainably. Therefore, priority is given to land transport rather than air transport when artists are participating from the European countries.

THE WOMEN'S BUILDING
ARIEL – Feminisms in Aesthetics is supported by and started in collaboration with the Women’s Building. ARIEL’s platform is housed in the building’s ground floor, where a varying exhibition program is available to the public and can be viewed 24/7 from street level. ARIEL wishes to build on the groundbreaking work done by the Women’s Building, with which it has joined hands in order to contribute to the public debate and to assemble a multidisciplinary environment that can reflect and support the many initiatives and organizations in the building: Danish Women’s Society, Intercultural Women’s Council, Women’s Artists’ Society, Women’s Council, Women in Music, Folkevirke and KFUK’s Social Work.
The Women’s Building was initiated on the basis of The Women’s Exhibition in 1895. The building was designed by the female architect Ragna Grubb and inaugurated in 1936.

The new initiative ARIEL PRESS will publish and co-produce publications that originate from or go in connection with the program for ARIEL's exhibitions and public events under ARI. All publications support ARIEL's overall mission to nuance and illuminate a current and diverse field of feminist theory and art practice in the 21st century.

We are delighted to inform more about the upcoming publications soon. Managing publisher and editor: Mille Højerslev Nielsen

ARCHIVING NORDIC FEMINISMS
Feminism is currently a broad and diverse movement that creates a new framework for understanding and facilitates debates around diversity, intersectionality, as well as the recognition of value, identity and rights of indigenous peoples, minorities and the multi-ethnic world. As feminism's room for maneuver is nuanced, it has an impact on the Nordic countries' solid position and their tradition of feminist engagement. The basis for the initiative is therefore historically significant, and, thanks to the project's long-term culture and artistic ambitions, contributes to a current study of the feminist set of values in the Nordic region. The initiative includes, in 2020 and 2021, to create an open, accessible digital platform across the Nordic countries, involving the public by bringing together a high-current field and facilitating access to resources on current issues.

In 2022 we will hold the Nordic symposium ARCHIVING NORDIC FEMINISMS. The aim is to create an interdisciplinary meeting based on the aesthetic field and literature, in which significant branches of feminism are debated and unfolded in a Nordic context. The intention here is to facilitate experience - and knowledge exchange, inspiration and dissemination of methods across research environments, civil society, associations and artistic practices. A collection of essays commissioned for the symposium is published along with excerpts of literature and rounds off the project.
