The spirit of Heiko Pfreundt´s (lives and works in Berlin, DE) current practices moves between digital ruins, informal learning, a new desire of permanence in games and curatorial plays. In the recent series IS IT A GAME? at Kreuzberg Pavillon, he and Lisa Schorm specify this range of interests in art and games and their facilities from the perspective of a player in which the ultimate prize is neither to be an artist, nor a curator but to be completely undisciplined. His recent collaborations include projects with Omsk Social Club, The Feminist Gaming Group by Eloise Bonneviot and a joint venture of Dafna Maimon and Lucinda Dayhew for an artistic Escape Room. He writes occasionally about project spaces and translation of space as artistic practice in hybrid localities. In 2019 he was one of the organizers of the Project Space Festival Berlin - When the Hunger starts.

Do you know what F. asked students at the art academy who wanted to join his video class? “I hope you don’t mind being unemployed later”. Do these people who say this actually know how much they scare those who come from working-class backgrounds?
It’s a pity that such disillusioned artists in the form of professors are still appointed on the basis of their institutional establishment and the promise of an art market, and not according to their knowledge of self-organization. Something which helps to shift the focus from the perception of art institutions and the amount of disposable jobs more to a community of self-organized spaces, which reflect those dependencies and help to sustain the cultural workers of today.

Winning a battle, losing a war.

Still going slow and steady with the opening of our space, which means that something will definitely be changed after doing all our work on having the window towards the streets. Embracing the uncanny is what we are used to doing in our work as artists and cultural workers, but we are not thrilled by the administration of the pandemic situation and the maintenance of it, so all our liability lies in the reflections.

14.06.21

Hello,
I know you don’t have the time and patience to understand what this is all about, because you are busy doing money and checking analytics. But if anyone reads this anyway, we really are not a commercial gallery in the making, we have no focus on abstract expressionism, we do not favor male artists over female and non-binary artists as your diagrams state, nobody is around any age over here and we are not pleased that you created a profile of our space on your platform.
The point is: we really don‘t have the time and the energy to claim these profiles that companies like yours create about art spaces without their consent. We are cultural workers who are not getting paid for correcting the mistakes of your algorithms and false interpretations of our projects. Please understand that it is not an opportunity for us to serve you for free, nor is this really a missed opportunity for the artists we are working with. And please respect that we are absolutely aware of the facts of our own work and that we do not need your double-checking of it. So, please don‘t tell us on the phone that any of the artists we are collaborating with, might be sad, when we would ask you to remove us from your platform. To conclude: your claim of transparency and facts as your very differentiated rankings of project spaces in your system are a huge laughingstock, and don‘t mean anything to us.
Thank you and farewell.

I am in complete shock that after two years of pandemic at least 20 project spaces and initiatives of Berlin have been defunded today, and you are running one of them and don‘t know how you will pay the rent the next two years. This is an absolute disaster after 10 years of work on your feet. I am lost for words at the moment. Why do cultural workers have to beg so hard to simply exist?
I don’t know.

25.10.21

The concept of participation is completely misunderstood these days. It seems to be a term coined by higher social classes, remaining alien to me. Today I received a message that I was losing another job because I had been doing it for more than four years now, and that it was time for others to participate as well. It gave the impression that extending the job for two more years would be too selfish. It’s not that I didn’t already know all this from previous jobs at my former university. It’s just a normal process with cultural workers being introduced as teachers while getting replaced from semester to semester. It is commonplace. However, this has never been pitted so strongly against the participation of others. So why can’t we make it the first rule in the game to not explain the concept of participation to someone who is about to lose their participation? Why is it so easy for people to constantly replace everything in our cultural economies, when art is officially about slowing things down, getting focus and continuing to elaborate? How can the effort to participate prevent the effort to build truly reliable structures? Why does it seem to me that we cultural workers with parents from below the middle class have long since become nothing more than an avantgardistic gig economy for some of our fellow students from good families? Why do the big cultural events still depend on cheap labour from the art academies? And what prevents the state from at least securing some self-organized project spaces of those who are still engaged in the arts? In the end, I am only certain of one thing: working-class children are never bored with the arts. They simply do not get dissatisfied in a field of work that seems so detached from everything people understand by work. That is not to say that there is not enough work to be found here. A lot of it just gets done.
