Since the advent of photography, questions of human access to the world and mediation through media have become more urgent. With computer-generated images, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the question arises today more than ever: Have reality and image swapped roles? Is it even possible to distinguish between the two?
The Symposium On Reality in collaboration with düsseldorf photo+ Biennale for Visual and Sonic Media invites artists, scientists, philosophers and media theorists to examine the ways in which visual media contribute to our understanding of reality.
The symposium considers photography as an everyday cultural technique and draws on philosophical, sociological and ethical discourses. It critically examines how reality is constructed through techniques of visualization and naming and addresses the challenges presented by the latest imaging techniques. The perspectives range from an investigative look at the present to speculative approaches that include the past and the future.
