Prater Digital presents the exhibition PASSING DATA - UPCYCLING THE DIGITAL, which will open online and on-site at the Transmediale Studio Berlin, on 21 November 2024 at 7 pm CTE. The event will take place in German and in English.
It is part of COPY PASTE WASTE, an interdisciplinary year-long programme by Prater Digital at the municipal Prater Gallery. COPY PASTE WASTE draws attention to the overproduction of digital data and aims to develop models for a mindful, digital approach - at home, at work, in the cultural sector and artistic practices. COPY PASTE WASTE consists of expert talks, network meetings with selected cultural institutions, a collective Wiki and adigital exhibition that highlights the multi-layered and complex connections between digitalisation and sustainability.
PASSING DATA - UPCYCLING THE DIGITAL presents six internationally active artists: Veneta Adrova, Raphael Bastide, Bruno Gola, Kathrin Hunze, Yehwan Song and Shinji Toya. In their work, they deal with the ephemerality of digital material and its interdependence with physical resources. They also explore social power structures and how these can be generated or manipulated online.
The artists were invited by the curators Tereza Havlíková and Katharina Von Hagenow to participate in an Art Swap. In tandems, they exchanged parts of their unused, abandoned data which were still stored in the archive and consuming resources. After they swapped graphic elements, fonts, GIFs, video, code or sound files, the artists deleted them from their own personal archives, thereby partially giving up their authorship. For the exhibition PASSING DATA - UPCYCLING THE DIGITAL, the artists reworked this data in their own artistic style. In doing so, they submitted themselves to the unknown and consciously tested the upcycling principle as an artistic-speculative method in relation to digital resources.
