Fanning Space and Memory

On Katrin Mayer’s #c0da.

c0da is the current research project and publishing platform (www.c0da.org) of Katrin Mayer, that she recently transferred to an exhibition space at the Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe. Additionally she created a speculative rereading of the standard creation myth of the ‘fan shaped’ city Karlsruhe, according to which Margrave Karl Wilhelm dreamt of a fan and resolved to orient the layout of his palace and city to this radial
motif. She speculates that the fan was a genuinely female figure and takes the word `fan ́ quite literally: in British English, the term ‘fanny’ is a slang expression for vulva.

During the 18th and 19th centuries the fan was a telegraphic tool, part of the basic equipment of bodies that
were coded as feminine. It was scenarized in literature and art as an instrument of emancipatory and subversive communication. Fragments of this site-specific research narrative ”The fanny Book of Carolsruh” are spread over these pages.
