This month we shine a light on a new initiative to remember a pioneering artist and protect the environment. Plus, we return to our favorite hometown venue for a party and a workshop, and a key Refuge resident drops a new track in collaboration with an exciting newcomer.
Initiative:
Few musicians can imagine reaching the level of global influence and acclaim that Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March this year, attained over the course of his almost 50-year career. Sakamoto was also an outspoken environmentalist, which is why those close to him have decided to honor his memory by launching TREES FOR SAKAMOTO, a fundraising campaign to support tree-planting initiatives across the globe. Organizers have selected five regions for the first round of fundraising, including parts of Brazil, China, Japan, Tanzania, and Indonesia. If you’re able to donate, pay tribute to one of the greats by taking a stand against environmental destruction!
Event:
On 30 September we’re back at Arkaoda in Neukölln for our next Berlin dance. Running from 22:00-06:00, we’ve put together an all-star lineup of friends and residents including a b2b downstairs from Two Thou & The Neighbourhood Character, sets from DJ Amir (acclaimed as half of the duo Kon & Amir), miszo and Deniz Arslan in the basement. Upstairs is soundtracked by MAKAYABUNDO, mokeyanju and Calamidades Lola. The event is part of our Autumn European tour and will include a DJ workshop in the venue before the party hosted by The Neighbourhood Character – head to the Refuge Worldwide website to read more details and apply.

Release:
For our release of the month, we’ve selected the brand new single from Berlin-based producer, Reverse Engineering co-founder and Refuge resident Gabriel Gifford, co-produced by Greek artist Aphty Khèa. ‘Voices From The Wind’ pairs shape-shifting beats with icy, combative vocals from Khèa, who, using gender-neutral grammar rarely used in Greek, delivers “an angry queer letter to queerphobes globally.” The single is the first taste of Gifford’s upcoming album ‘Hailstone King’, which comes out on 10 November.
